Mount Rainier is Washington’s most iconic destinations. This national park features the tallest volcano in the US and plenty of alpine meadows, tranquil lakes, and views of the surrounding mountains. This is truly a dream destination, especially in summer time but can be beautiful with its winter snow cover.
From quiet, secluded spots to sweeping vistas, here’s your ultimate guide to the best places to elope at Mount Rainier National Park from your local elopement photographer:
Best for: Summer wildflowers or fall foliage or winter snow-covered landscapes
If you’re dreaming of saying your vows surrounded by wildflower-filled meadows and panoramic views of Mount Rainier and nearby peaks, then Paradise is your place. Located at an elevation of 5,400 feet, this area gets you sweeping views right from the parking lot. It’s got plenty of trails to explore and quiet spots to get away from the crowds. You might have a friendly marmot dropping in to say hi.
In the winter, this is the only accessible area in the park but on a clear day, you can still get unmatched views of Mount Rainier. For the skier/snowboarder, you can hike up and ski on the volcano (within reason and avoiding avalanche danger zones). One of my favorite times to visit in the winter is early season when there’s just enough snow to dust everything and you can watch the alpenglow at sunset.
Tip: Avoid mid-day to get away from the crowds, especially during peak season. Sunset is easy to achieve in the winter with the gate closures and sunrise is best for summer-time.
Best for: Easy access to an alpine lake with reflections of Mount Rainier
For couples who want to experience the grandeur of Mount Rainier while also enjoying a tranquil, reflective scene, Reflection Lakes is a must. These serene lakes offer some of the best opportunities for capturing Mount Rainier’s iconic reflection in the water, especially during sunrise or sunset. It’s right off the road, so it’s easy to access, deeming it more popular, but visiting here closer to sunrise or sunset means you’ll have fewer people to contend with. By the lakes, you can say your vows in private and then have a first dance in the woods all to yourself.
Tip: If you want to catch the reflection at its best, plan to arrive before sunrise when the water is still and the park is less crowded.
Best for: Hikers who love exploring the alpine
For couples who love adventure and jaw-dropping mountain views, the Skyline Trail is one of the most picturesque hikes at Mount Rainier. This trail takes you through alpine meadows, past waterfalls, and offers panoramic vistas of Mount Rainier and the surrounding landscape. It’s a longer hike, but the views along the way are unforgettable. Imagine finding a nook along the ridge where you can say your vows with a jaw-dropping backdrop of Mount Rainier and standing above an active glacier runoff. Then enjoy a picnic sitting on the rocks with a view of other volcanoes in the distance. This trail provides a unique, rugged experience for your elopement!
Tip: This is a longer, more strenuous hike, so be prepared for a challenging trek. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, snacks, and layers for the changing weather.
Best for: Sunrise hike to watch the colors change on Mount Rainier
For a unique, other-worldly experience, Fremont Lookout is the perfect hike for your elopement. The whole trail is above treeline where you can enjoy the scenery change from wildflower meadows to a Mars-like environment with Mount Rainier and its snowy flanks rising above. It’s best for sunrise when the sun is on your side. You can say your vows on the lookout and sip a steaming cup of coffee as you watch the sun usher your first day as a married couple. Behind you, a dreamy meadow offers another variety of backdrop for you to enjoy before you continue exploring the rest of the area.
Tip: Go mid-week to avoid the crowds because it’s a well-known spot for sunrises, for good reason! Bring a cozy blanket to stay warm as you watch the sunrise too.
Best for: Hikers who want an amazing variety of landscape between alpine lakes and mountains
Tolmie Peak Lookout is a breathtaking location for an elopement with sweeping views of Mount Rainier, the surrounding wilderness, and an alpine lake. The hike is perfect as a half day adventure and best at sunset. You emerge from the forest to a wildflower alpine lake before climbing one last section to the ridge for the grand views of area. You can say your vows at the lake and then have your first dance on the ridge above and cut your cake at the lookout. There’s plenty of space here so you can have your elopement ceremony in private.
Tip: Pack your wedding attire in your bag and change once you’re close to the top so you don’t have to sweat through it all. And bring wet wipes and make up to feel fresh again!
Best for: Skiers and snowboarders in the winter
For the winter sport enthusiasts, Crystal Mountain is your destination! With views of up to 5 volcanoes from the top of the mountain, including Mount Rainier as the main highlight, there’s so much to enjoy. It offers a unique experience for your elopement. This is also great for those who have guests since the ski resort can accommodate more people. There are also locations along the ridge line that allow for a quiet time to say your vows and say I do with the most gorgeous winter backdrop.
For the non-skier, Crystal Mountain is also great in the summer time as a hiking destination. The gondola is a great way to get you to the summit with the same but more colorful view of Mount Rainier during wildflower season. Summertime is also less crowded on the mountain than in winter.
Tip: Elope with a photographer who is also an experienced skier/snowboarder so they can get the best action photos of you in your wedding attire! (psst I’m an advanced/expert skier willing to follow you down any run and photograph it all!)
Eloping in Mount Rainier National Park is an unforgettable experience, offering an array of stunning backdrops and peaceful locations for your special day. Whether you’re drawn to wildflower meadows, serene lakes, rugged peaks, or high-altitude vistas, there’s a spot perfect for your elopement. As your elopement photographer, I’m here to help you pick out the best location for you whether it’s on this list or another location.
Within the National Park, permits are required and must be applied for in advance. This is something I help all my couples with so you don’t feel stressed about getting everything in order. While summer time is almost guaranteed sunny days in Washington, mountain weather always has a mind of its own, so be prepared for quick changes in weather.
No matter which part of the park you choose, you’ll undoubtably find an incredible experience at Mount Rainier National Park.
