When to Elope in the Dolomites

The Dolomites is most definitely a bucket-list destination. As someone who’s been to the Alps more than 5 separate occasions, I can confirm it’s an incredible location. The Dolomites are situated in Northern Italy in a region called South Tyrol, bordering Austria and close to southern Germany. It is a UNESCO site, meaning that it is internationally designated as an outstanding location and well preserved for generations of recreation and enjoyment. It is filled with rugged alpine peaks, gorgeous meadows and lush autumn forests. The Dolomites has quaint mountain towns that any American mountain town can’t quite rival. As a popular tourist destination, the Dolomites can get quite crowded. But if you’re looking to elope in the Dolomites, you might want to consider the time of year you visit to tie the knot. Let’s break down the best seasons to elope in the Dolomites, so you can make the most of your special day.

I’m Cherlyn, a Destination Elopement Photographer, who’s hiked hundreds of various trails around the world. As a skier and hiker, I’ve experienced the full spectrum of seasons in the mountains and I’ll share with you when I think you should elope in the Dolomites!

Summer [July – September]

Pros

If you’re a hiker, you’ll know that summer is peak hiking season. It’s when trails are melted out and wildflowers start blooming. In the Dolomites, weather is quite mild and never gets too hot in the summer even when cities like Venice or Rome are boiling. That’s the advantage of having a mountain elopement!

When weather is good, that means you have so many options of activities from horseback riding to canoeing an alpine lake to hiking to your dreamy Dolomites ceremony location. You can even backpack, climb, or complete a via ferrata for the thrill-seeking couple. Think of staying at a hut for a unique post-elopement honeymoon (PS private rooms exist in the huts!).

Cons

Like most summer destinations, the Dolomites gets very busy during high season. To avoid the crowds, you’ll want to wake up early or stay up late when most tourists aren’t around. During the summer season, the cost for lodging and excursions can increase.

Bottom Line

If you want good weather and aren’t afraid to take measures to avoid the crowds, summer is a great time to elope in the Dolomites

Ready to start planning your summer Dolomites elopement? Let’s get this thing started!

Fall [October]

Pros

All my friends will tell you that my favorite season is fall and for good reason! It’s the most colorful time in the mountains when trees are changing color. In the Dolomites, they have European Larches, much like the trees we find back in my home state of Washington. They turn a vibrant golden color mid-October through late October and it’s such a beautiful sight.

And even if fall colors isn’t your MO, the smaller tourist crowd is a huge plus side to fall. In the summer, restaurants and popular hiking destinations are extremely crowded and parking spots are limited. But come fall, the crowds lessen so much that it feels like only locals are the ones outside. You can take your pick for gondola rides and various lodging.

Cons

Yes, I only list one month for fall because it is short lasting in the Dolomites. Snow starts coming in the high altitude locations in early October and by late October, a thick layer of snow is common. Take it from my experience – I once booked a trip end of October in the Dolomites and we had to drastically change plans.

While snow is a possibility in October, temperatures can also be very mild until the first major snowstorm (usually end of October into early November). However, because fall is shoulder season in the Dolomites, a lot of amenities shut down. Many huts are closed mid-October and many activities aren’t possible due to snow.

Bottom Line

Fall is one of the most magical times to elope in the Dolomites. The summer crowds have started to thin out, and the Dolomites is covered in golden, orange, and red hues as the foliage changes. The cooler temperatures and quieter trails make for a serene and intimate elopement experience. This is one of my personal favorite times of the year to fully enjoy the Dolomties. If you’re lucky you’ll get a fresh dusting of snow perfect for views while keeping hiking snow-free.

Winter/Spring [November – June]

Pros

For the snow-lovers and skiers, this is your time to elope! As with most mountain regions, winter lasts much longer than other seasons. But there’s something different about the stillness of winter that has its own magical qualities. It’s perfect if you like to snowshoe, ski, or snowboard. The Seiseralm region has over 80km of cross country trails!

Winter is the easiest time to find solitude (away from the ski resorts) to say your vows in private. It’s unconventional, but unique!

Cons

The shoulder months of November-early December and April-May can be tricky since places are transitioning between winter and summer, yet snow still persists during these months. December-March is the best time for true winter in the Dolomites. As with winter, it can get cold, so having active activities or indoor activity options are a great idea to stay warm. The Dolomites doesn’t have a lot of precipitation and a rather low snow depth, meaning weather is likely to be decent during your elopement.

Winter means that a lot of public transportation is closed and certain huts can close too. However, driving is a great option and there’s also huts that open only in winter. Huts are not only for lodging but they are restaurants in the Dolomites. Get a hot cocoa to warm yourself up!

Bottom Line

Winter is a great time to elope in the Dolomites if you love the snow. It comes with its difficulties like most winter destinations but offers a great opportunity to elope your way!

So when should you elope in the Dolomites?

When planning your Dolomites elopement, consider these factors:

  • Weather and Conditions: If you’re seeking a warm, sunny ceremony, summer is your best bet. If you prefer cooler temperatures and a quieter atmosphere, fall or winter may be ideal.
  • Accessibility: While most Dolomites destinations are open year-round, some roads close for cars and amenities can be limited in the winter months.
  • Crowds: Summer is the busiest season, but there’s always ways to find solitude regardless the season

No matter when you decide to elope at in the Dolomites, you’re sure to have the most epic scenery. With its stunning landscapes, diversity of environments, and peaceful atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to say your vows. Choose the season that resonates most with your vision, and let the beauty of the Dolomites be the backdrop to your incredible elopement.
